Ambitious Tudors manager Brennan insists there is still room for improvement

The Tudors have enjoyed an impressive first half of the season, but Brennan says he will not accept anything other than the best from his side.

Hemel have operated somewhat of a revolving door transfer policy so far in their debut Conference South campaign, and this looks set to continue.

Speaking to club press officer Allan Mitchell, Brennan said: “Doing OK is just not good enough if you want success – you need to be good, really good.

“I wouldn’t say that the squad is big enough if I’m being honest – I still think that we are two players short at this moment in time.

“I wouldn’t usually say something like that but I do genuinely believe that at this moment in time. We need another couple of players, 100 per cent.

“We’ve got a massively busy schedule coming up and we need players that fit our criteria; young, hungry players that have serious ability.

“There’s a few players out on loan but they will stay out on loan. We are going in a different direction and they know that.

“You need to do what Ben Mackey did for us last year, what Lewis Toomey did for us last year, what Jordan Parkes has done, what Dave Pearce did.

“We need that at this level, so until we find that or are making that happen, we will keep searching and keep trying to improve.

“That’s down to they players – they can’t say they don’t get an opportunity. Here we are fair and give everyone an opportunity.

“I’d love the team to pick itself, but it’s up to the players to make that happen. The platform’s there, I believe in the players, but then it’s down to them.”

Brennan also dismissed rumours that centre-back Moussa Diarra could leave the club, insisting the big Frenchman still has a lot to learn at this level.

“No-one has ever come in for Moussa since we have been at this football club,” said the Hemel boss. “To be perfectly honest, Moussa’s concentration levels don’t allow him to be a professional footballer.

“Until he gets that right, with the attributes he’s got, then Moussa ain’t going to be a professional footballer. I’ve told him that and worked with him on his game.

“He’s made a big sacrifice coming over here from Paris. We rate him and think he’s got the right attributes, but he needs to be consistent at what he’s good at – heading the ball and defending – and his concentration and communication have to improve.”

While the Tudors have been in excellent form recently, the same cannot be said of the Vauxhall Road pitch – something Brennan is only too aware of.

“This football club has come miles and miles on the field, but now it has to catch up off the field – it’s really that simple,” he said.

“We’ve got to get those standards up, but that’s not my job. With regards to the pitch, there’s absolutely nothing we can do about it.

“Everyone knows that the pitch isn’t good enough – it needs an investment, a heavy investment, and it needs to only be used for the first team.

“But we’ve just got to keep sticking together, keep working hard, and taking it game by game and focussing.”

Brennan is a fiercely ambitious coach, and he is adamant that playing standards will continue to improve with him at the helm.

He added: “We’re over-achieving at the moment, but I’m not happy. If we were top I’d be happy; that’s the only place I want us to be.

“Our start to the season knocked us, but the form we are in at the moment is title form.

“We still need to defend better, and we want to be conceding less than a goal a game – along with our target of scoring three per game. That’s where we want to be.”
