Bowls round-up: Including finals weekend at Potten End, Tring and Berkhamsted

It was finals weekend for a number of clubs in Dacorum as a host of trophies were up for grabs.

Potten End played Amersham at home and went down 62-56, despite top rink going to Arthur Page, Bob Simpson and Linda Burfot.

There was better news for the Potten End men as they travelled to Batchwood and won 94-82 with highest rink played by John Lowe, Colin Salery, Cyril Pike and Tony Howard.

The ladies played Harpenden at home and won 55-39, with top rink going to Eileen Pacitti, Ann Wigmore and Jean Jones.

Meanwhile, the club held its finals weekend and the winners were: Janice Burke – Ladies’ Clubman Singles; Jack Bunting – Novice Singles; Tony Howard – 7up; Avis Jackson, Karen Baxter, Jean Jones – Ladies’ Triples; Hannah – Ladies’ Novices; Tony Howard, Neil Fancourt – Men’s Pairs; Jean Murphy, Arthur Page – Australian Pairs; Sue Marshall, Linda Burfot – Ladies’ Pairs; Tony Howard – Men’s Two-Wood Singles; Steve Griffiths, Eddie Clark, Andy Dukes – Friday Night Aggregate; Kevin Aston, Cyril Pike, Phil Bunting – Men’s Triples; Steve Wilson – Clubman Singles; Alan Jones, Sandra Clark – Mixed Pairs; Glad Pearce – Ladies’ Two-Wood Singles; Jan Dean – Ladies’ Over 60’s Singles; Tony Howard – Over 65’s Singles; Alan Jones, Jean Jones – Husband & Wife; Ann Wigmore – Ladies’ Champion; Keith Martindale – Men’s Champion.

Kitcheners entertained members of Mencap last week to give them an experience of bowls.

In the afternoon the club was visited by Amersham for a four-rink mixed triples match which they won 79-55. Dave Richardson, Dave Shirley and Chris Ivin were the highest triples.

On Saturday, the club played Berkhamsted in a five-rink mixed match and won by two shots. Highest rink for Kitcheners was Mavis Janes, Albert Graydon, Colin Jones and Tony Scattergood.

The following day, the club took on Beech Hill in a four-rink mixed match and won 76-66. Highest rink was Steve Delderfield, Jan Scattergood, Mike Waterhouse and Alan Doydge.

Tring Bowls Club’s competition finals proved to exciting affairs, with a number of matches being decided on the last or penultimate end.

The ladies’ winners were: Singles - Zena Livesey; Novices Singles - Trish Hewetson; Pairs - Jill Wallis and Trish Hewetson; Handicap - Zena Livesey; Two-Woods - Zena Livesey.

Men’s winners: Menes Championship - David Holloway; Novices Singles - Roy Wright; Tom Rolf Singles - Brian Livesey; Pairs - David Cartland and Bob Kerry; Open Pairs - Roy Wright and Bob Relf; Handicap - Brian Livesey; Fixed Jack Centenary Cup - Brian Livesey.

The Chella Cup team event was won by Trish Hewetson, Alan Lummis, David Chatterly, David Cartland and Brian Livesey.

> Berkhamsted

It was finals weekend at Berkhamsted Bowls Club, with plenty of trophies up for grabs.

The winners on the day were: Ladies’ Singles Champion - Jackie Cormack; Men’s Singles - Steve Burrell; Ladies’ Two-Wood Singles - Janice Murgatroyd; Men’s Two-Wood - Dave Sear; Veterans’ Competition - Steve Burrell; Highland Trophy - Lesley Brown; Pedlow Trophy - Anne Cutting and Peter Batchelor; Mixed Pairs - Janice Murgatroyd and Tony Perry; Ladies’ Pairs – Anne Furlong and Jackie Cormack; Men’s Pairs - Kevin Clarke and David Brown.

Winning his third competition, Steve Burrell triumphed in the Handicap event, while Alice Biggs won the Seniors’ Singles competition.

Two of the club’s junior members were also in the finals, with Christopher Webb winning the Novices Competition and David Scoot taking the U18 title.

In the team competitions, the triples match was won by Nolan Biggs, Judy Kenyona and Peter Batchelor, while the fours match was won by Ray Kessler, Liz Baker, Peter Batchelor and Ken Maynard.

Berkhamsted also had narrow 101-99 defeat to Kitcheners despite a top rink of Gill Howells, Chris Knight, Janet Jackson and Ken Maynard.

In the Dacorum Trophy match against Kings Langley, the result was all on the last end which Berkhamsted lost by five shots, giving an overall 67-61 win to Kings.

The Berkhamsted men’s team won but the ladies and the mixed teams lost which gave Langley four points to Berkhamsted’s one.
