Bowls round-up: All the action from clubs across Dacorum

> Potten End

The Potten End red team secured another convincing win in the Veterans’ League as they won both rinks in their clash with Kings Langley to triumph by 46 shots to 24 on aggregate.

Elsewhere, the ladies ran out clear winners in their County League match against Herts by 25 shots to 10, and the men visited Mill End for a closely fought County Inter Club match – eventually emerging winners by two rinks to one and by four shots overall.

In the first round of the ladies’ Top Club competition, Potten End were delighted with a resounding victory by three rinks to one against Croxley.

The club had mixed fortunes in their two friendly matches – at Chessvale the team could not master the unfamiliar artificial surface and went down by 62 shots to 90.

On Sunday, Potten End entertained Barton le Clay and ran out winners by 91 shots to 78. This was largely due to the top rink of Cyril Pike, Brian Howlett, Peter Burke and Andy Dukes.

> Hemel Hempstead

Kevin Greene was on form for Hemel Hempstead as he featured in the top rink on both occasions this week.

In the home match against Welwyn and District, the visitors struggled on a challenging green and Hemel ran out emphatic 104-48 winners. Also in the top rink were Malcolm Smith, Steve Groome and Brenda Bennitt.

Hemel weren’t so strong in a triples match at St Albans, however, losing 67-88. Peggy Vardy and skip Allen Bennitt joined Greene in the top rink.

The Hemel ladies then travelled to Linslade and did just enough to win a close match 52-49. The top rink was Dora Gruber, Pat Barker and skip Brenda Bennitt.

Friday’s Watford and District League match with Bushey was an even closer affair, with Hemel losing by just one shot.

In the first round of the men’s County Fours, Ken Lowe, Roger Wakefield, Steve Harburn and Mark Woodcock had a superb win against a strong Potten End team.

> Kitcheners

Kitcheners suffered two defeats at the hands of Garston this weekend as they were beaten in the county inter-club competition on Friday and lost in a four-rink mixed triples match by two shots on Sunday.

The highest triples for Kitcheners was Roy Murray, Enid Rance and Micky Woodman.

On Saturday, the club had better fortune in their Dacorum Shield match against Tring. They won the mixed rink 22-19, won the ladies’ rink 25-16, but lost the men’s rink 23-15. Kitcheners therefore won by four points to one, and also won the friendly rinks 35-34.

> Berkhamsted

The Berkhamsted men started the week well with a win over Abbots Langley in the preliminary round of the National Men’s Top Club competition.

They won all five games, with Steve Burrell winning the singles, Dave Sear victorious in the two-woods, Kevin Clarke taking the pairs, the triples being won by Paul Macness, Brian Ralphs and Terry Kenyon, and the fours by Nigel Eckhert, Tom Presland, Maurice Primo and Wally Dunn.

Meanwhile, Carole Dunn, Jackie Cormack and Anne Furlong played their first round of the County Triples on a day of heavy rain. They went into an early lead but the visitors conceded the game because of the weather.

In the Herts Inter-Club Team Championships, Berko won 65-57.

Later in the week, the ladies lost 4-0 to Bushey, and things did not improve when the friendly game against North Watford was lost 58-65 despite a top rink from David Brown, Linda Ralphs and John Shotton.

However, Berkhamsted returned to winning ways on Sunday against Bushey by 110 shots to 102, with a top rink of Gill Howells, Gary Fisher and Tony Perry. The men finished the week off as they had started it, with a 37-29 win in the National Club Two Fours against a team from Bovingdon to progress to the next round.
