A hard fought 4-1 win against Luton meant that the Berkhamsted & Hemel Hempstead Hockey Club men’s first XI kept their promotion challenge alive.

Captain Pete Allam scored a hat-trick of short corners, with Simon Royal also on target as Berko turned a 1-1 half-time scoreline into a big win.

Next week’s fixture is away at league leaders West Herts – a victory for Berko should be enough to see them crowned champions, but a defeat would mean that the team miss out on promotion.

Elsewhere, the men’s second team continued their run of wins as they beat promotion challengers Southgate Adelaide I 6-1 at the weekend.

Five goals in the second half was reward for Berkhamsted’s strength in depth and hard work.

The men’s fourth team, meanwhile, won a narrow game against Southgate Adelaide III, with a late goal from Richard Peachey securing a 1-0 victory.

The men’s fifths shared a 0-0 draw with Rickmansworth in a tight game which included a penalty save from Joseph Devey, while the men’s third XI suffered a frustrating 1-0 defeat against promotion challengers Letchworth.

In action elsewhere, the Ladies’ first team beat Cheshunt 3-0 in a key fixture to all but secure their safety in the league.

It was a day to remember for the ladies’ thirds XI as they had their biggest win of the season against Saffron Walden.

Charlie Nash hit a hat-trick in a 6-0 victory which, along with their games in hand, could propel the team to the heady heights of fourth place in the league table.

The ladies’ second team drew 1-1 in frustrating style, with victory being snatched at the end of the game against Blueharts. While still unbeaten, they will want to put the league to bed over the next couple of weeks.

Elsewhere, it was all smiles for the Berkhamsted U10 team as they enjoyed success in Luton.

The team started off with a scrappy 0-0 draw against Leighton Buzzard, but this was followed by a thrilling 4-0 win over Tring with three goals from Abby Hire and one from Jonanthan Savage.

Next up was a 0-0 draw with Bedford III, before Berko went down 1-0 to a late goal against Bedford I in their final match of the day.

The U12s also had an enjoyable day at the Luton tournament – while the results didn’t go their way, the youngsters enjoyed the experience.
