UK braced for sweltering Bank Holiday

The UK is poised for a scorching Bank Holiday weekend, with recent chilling winds and torrential downpours replaced by soaring temperatures.

According to the Met Office, temperatures at the weekend should be above the usual average for May, but exactly how good the news will be for sunseekers is unclear at the moment

Highs of around 21 or 22C look to be likely - however, it is possible that warm air will be drawn in from continental Europe, in which case warmer conditions of 25 or 26C can be expected.

In recent weeks, weather across the UK has been something of a mixed bag, with the south seeing the best conditions.

A warm front from the Azores brought the UK’s hottest day in April for almost 70 years, with the mercury reaching a record 27.9C in Surrey.

Temperatures at the London Marathon later that same week were the hottest on record, and higher than Athens, Ibiza and Jamaica.

However, some areas saw more than a month’s worth of rainfall within 24 hours on Monday, while Scotland was still suffering frost as recently as last week, making the predicted heatwave even more eagerly anticipated.
