WhatsApp has been updated with new features, including the ability to message a contact privately from within a group chat.
The features are contained in the messaging app’s version 2.19.11 update for iOS (Apple’s operating system for iPhone and iPad) which is available to download now.
Private messaging from group chats
The first major change allows users to message one another privately from within a group chat for the first time.
Pressing and holding on a message within a group from the person you’d like to message directly causes a new menu to pop up courtesy of the 3D Touch feature, first introduced in the iPhone 6S.
Touch ID reveals new menus and functions by pressing and holding an iPhone’s pressure-sensitive display on a message from the contact, giving them the option to star, reply or forward a message, among other choices.
Pressing ‘More’ at the bottom of the menu and selecting ‘Reply Privately’ then opens a private chat with the same contact, including the context of the message they’re replying to and the name of the chat they’re both included in.
Adding stickers to edited photos and videos
Tapping on the smiling face icon in the top right hand corner now gives users the options to select stickers to add to edited photos or videos alongside the standard emoji offerings.
The size of a sticker can be changed by pinching to increase or decrease it, and dragging it towards the bin icon will delete it altogether.
Checking statuses and stories with 3D Touch
Users can also check a contact’s status or uploaded story by using the same method on their name within the ‘Status’ tab
How can I get the update on my iPhone?
Simply open the App Store app and select WhatsApp from the list of apps currently eligible for updates. It should take no longer than a minute to download and update.
