A 17-year-old is in the running for the prestigious title of Young Scientist of the Year.
Federica Ezennia, from Hemel Hempstead, has been invited to showcase her work to judges and more than 70,000 people at The Big Bang Fair at Birmingham’s NEC in March.
During Year 12 at John F. Kennedy Catholic School, Federica applied for a Nuffield Research Placement at Harefield Hospital.
She was selected to for the placement, and then spent six weeks of her summer holiday doing scientific research.
Her research subject was ‘the role of growth factors and the extra cellular matrix’s composition in the expression of smooth muscle cell markers in valvular endothelial cells’.
Federica’s project is one of only about 200 to make it through to the National Science and Engineering Competition finals, out of thousands of projects from schools across the UK.
