The star of this year’s panto at Aylesbury Waterside Theatre had already performed in the town before she found fame on The X Factor.

Singer Sam Bailey, who was crowned winner of the TV talent show in 2013, will be making her pantomime debut in the role of Fairy Bowbells in this year’s production of Dick Whittington at the theatre on Exchange Street, Aylesbury.

But the star, who lives in Leicester with husband Craig and their three children, said that she is already familiar with Aylesbury – because she’s sung here before.

The 37-year-old said: “I’ve done shows in Aylesbury before, so I’ve been to the town quite a bit.

“I’ve performed in the social clubs – there’s one near that one way system in the town centre [The Ex-Servicemens Club in Walton Street].”

The former prison officer wowed the judges at the auditions of the ITV talent show with her powerhouse of a voice, and Take That’s Gary Barlow called it ‘incredible’.

Since then, she’s supported Beyonce on her UK tour, had her own number one album and live tour as well as penning an autobiography.

Sam – who is mum to Brooke, nine, Tommy five, and Miley, six months – says she’s looking forward to bringing her eldest two to ‘watch mummy on stage’, and says panto holds lots of memories for her.

She said: “I remember going to watch the panto with my nan and grandad in Orpington when I was a little girl.

“It’s just so much fun and I’m really looking forward to it. I’m such a newbie at this and I’m worried about forgetting my lines, but everyone says that’s half the fun.

“I don’t agree when people say pantomime is the end of your career. It’s something you do at Christmas and it’s a bit of a laugh. I bet I’ll get the bug!”

Sam says she’s excited about donning her fairy wings, even though she’s a self-confessed tomboy.

She said: “You wouldn’t catch me down the shops in something sparkly!”

Dick Whittington will run from Friday, December 11 to Sunday, Jan 3 2016. Visit www.atgtickets.com/aylesbury for more.
