Pint-sized pooch Lottie scooped first prize and Michelle Glover, who owns the creamy-coloured Cavachon (a mix between a cavalier King Charles spaniel and a bichon frise), says Lottie definitely rules the roost despite her size.

Michelle, 39, of Shearwater Road, Hemel Hempstead, said: “We have had her from eight weeks old and she is such a loving, well-behaved, funny and cheeky character.

“She loves people, cuddles and playing with her ball.”

Working cocker spaniel Betsie, owned by Ria Tiggs Hosier, came in at second place with her big brown eyes.

Ria, of Hancroft Road, Hemel Hempstead, said: “Betsie came to us when she was nine weeks old.

“She is very affectionate more human than dog. She loves to play, has learnt to put her toys away and can even tell the time.”

In third place was four-month-old Pugalier Riley, who lives in Pudding Lane, Hemel Hempstead, with owner Lisa Williams.

“She’s always doing something funny or naughty to get attention!”

After hundreds of entries from dogs, cats, hedgehogs and horses entered into the competition, it was clear the dogs were on top in the town when the decision about winners was handed over to the people of Hemel via the shopping centre’s Facebook page.

More than 3,300 votes were cast to crown the top three, but Lottie tipped the top spot with over 1,200 votes.
