WEATHER: As Abigail calms down, Kate storms her way in

The tail end of the Atlantic storm is set to bring torrential rain and floods, following the severe weather caused by Abigail, which saw 100mph gales and 40ft waves hit parts of the UK on Friday.

Abigail is the UK’s worst storm since last winter, mainly affecting the highlands and islands of Scotland, with power engineers on standby to deal with blackouts, as well as leading to closed schools and cancelled ferries.

Ex-Hurricane Kate is predicted to hit further south, however, coming in across southern Ireland. Scotland and the north west of England could see up to 8 inches of rain, while gusty winds of up to 90 km/h could cause coastal flooding in the south-west.

Colder air is on the way with snow on higher ground in Scotland forecast. According to the Met Office, it will feel much colder when compared to the “exceptionally mild conditions” we have seen recently.

The Weather Channel UK’s Leon Brown said:”There will be a brief colder snap from Friday to Saturday with snow showers for the higher parts of the Scottish Highlands, Pennines and Snowdonia and blizzard conditions over the mountain tops.”
