Was mystery man in back of car escaped prisoner?

Police say they are investigating whether there is a link between an escaped prisoner and a terrifying incident in which a woman found a man in the back of her car.

Michael Rothery, aged 43, absconded from HMP Spring Hill prison in Grendon Underwood in the early hours of Monday morning.

He is white, 5ft 9ins, of stocky build and bald and may have been wearing a green jacket.

Around 5.45am on Monday morning, a woman got into her car in Yardley Avenue, Pitstone.

She drove off but minutes later saw a man in the back seat.

The terrified woman pulled over in Castlemead and ran from the car.

The man jumped out of the car and fled the scene.

The man is white, between 40 and 50 years old, of medium build and average height and was possibly wearing a red top or jumper.

A police spokeswoman said they were looking at the possibility of whether the man in the car was the escaped prisoner.

She said: “It is one of a number of lines of enquiry.”
