Visitors from across globe celebrate the work of Graham Greene

Visitors from across the globe are expected in Berkhamsted between today and Sunday for the town’s 17th annual Graham Greene Festival.

A series of events focused around the acclaimed author of Brighton Rock and The Human Factor will be held in venues across the town.

Festival director Frances McCormack said: “Whether you are a seasoned festival-goer or a first-time visitor you are welcome to join.

“This year’s programme is diverse and wide-ranging, with a number of fascinating talks and exciting events.

Most of the festival’s events will be held at Berkhamsted School, Berkhamsted Town Hall, Berkhamsted Civic Centre and The Kings Arms pub in the High Street.

There will be films, lectures and even a guided walk.

An excellent selection of titles by Graham Greene will be available at the Oxfam Bookshop, where there will be window display devoted to the acclaimed novelist.

Graham Greene was born in 1904 in St. John’s House, a boarding house of Berkhamsted School on Chesham Road.

His father became headmaster of the establishment in 1910, and Graham went there as a boarder.

Bullied and profoundly depressed, he made several suicide attempts, including, as he wrote in his autobiography, by Russian roulette and by taking aspirin before going swimming in the school pool.
