A man in his 50s remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital after his motorbike collided with a car in the early hours of yesterday morning.
A stretch of the A41 was closed for around seven hours after the smash between a yellow Honda Jazz and a black Triumph motorcycle shortly after midnight.

Offers from the Herts, Beds and Cambs collision investigation unit are appealing for witnesses and information about the accident.

Firefighters had to cut a man in his 20s out of the car after the crash happened at around 12.15am.

The driver suffered a shoulder injury and was taken to Hemel Hempstead Hospital, but was later discharged.

Police and paramedics also attended the accident on the dual carriageway near Bourne End, where the biker suffered serious leg injuries.

A rapid response car, two ambulances and a Magpas land cruiser arrived at the incident, and the casualty was taken to Watford General Hospital as his injuries were so serious.

He was later taken to St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington where there is a major trauma centre and where he remains seriously ill.

An ambulance spokesman said: “There was a lot of debris on the road so we had to work as safely and quickly as possible.

“The motorcyclist had multiple injuries, he was anaesthetised and taken to Watford General in a critical condition. A second casualty inside the vehicle incurred a shoulder injury and was taken to Hemel Hempstead General Hospital for further treatment.”

Firefighters left the scene just after 1.05am, but the road remained closed northbound between A414 (Hemel Hempstead) and A4251 (Berkhamsted) until around 7am.

PC Jackie Lister, from the tri-force unit, said: “We would like to establish the exact circumstances of what happened and are therefore appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or the events prior to it to come forward.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident or the events leading up to it is asked to call PC Lister on the police non-emergency number 101, quoting the crime reference number ISR 896 of September 17.
