Trees recycled to encourage birds

Those interested in finding out about the renovation of Hemel Hempstead’s historic water gardens got to see recycling in action at an activity day over the weekend.

Trees which did not form part of garden designer Geoffrey Jellicoe’s original design for the area were cut down, turned into planks and remade into bird boxes before visitors’ very eyes.

Families were given the chance to paint and take some birdboxes, while others were placed in the remaining trees as one of the many methods of increasing biodiversity within the town landmark.

Information about the full scale of the Heritage Lottery, Big Lottery and Dacorum Borough Council-funded project to restore the gardens to their original state was also given out by council officers on hand during the day.
