Tree-mendous recycling scheme in its 20th year

In partnership with 1st Berkhamsted Scouts and 1st Tring Scouts groups, the Dacorum Borough Council scheme recycled more trees than ever this year.

Collectively, the Scout groups had more than 1,000 homes register their trees to be collected, which were then taken to recycling sites in Berkhamsted, Tring and Hemel Hempstead.

There were also hundreds of drive-by recyclers from 8.30am; with some even bringing their trees along on foot, or dragging them along on a push bike.

Melanie Parr, Dacorum Borough Council’s Environmental Awareness Officer, said: “We should all be very proud; not only is it impressive how many residents decided to recycle their Christmas trees, but also the fact that over a hundred beavers, cubs, scouts and scout leaders volunteered to take part in making all of this possible, proving themselves to be a fundamental asset to our green community.”

More than 11 tonnes of wood chips were made available to those who had brought their trees in; these chippings proved very popular with green-fingered residents, with hundreds of sacks being given away to be used in gardens as a great weed preventative.
