Amateur bakers entered their sweet treats at Berkhamsted Town Hall on Saturday (February 21).

There were three different age categories - adults, young adults and children.

Cakes were judged on appearance, taste and texture by three judges - Berkhamsted’s Deputy Mayor Tom Ritchie, NSPCC volunteer Lisa Wright and baker Louise Fanthorpe.

“The prizes were also great I would really like to thank Marks and Spencer Berkhamsted, Carphone Warehouse Berkhamsted, The Rex Cinema and Berkhamsted Arts and Crafts for their contributions to the Bake Off.”

Through International Service, Lorna will spend 10 weeks in Burkina Faso volunteering with local people in the country’s capital city Ouagadougou on a project to fight poverty.

She applied through the government funded International Citizen Service scheme for 18-25 year olds and will be working with the York-based development charity International Service to promote the rights of women, children and young people, disabled people and those living with HIV and AIDS.

“I have pledged to fundraise £1,500 for International Service in order to show my commitment to them before I do my project placement -The Bake off and the donations from those there helped me raise £500 which means I have now fundraised a total of £1,300 for International Service which is just incredible,” said Lorna.

“The reason I organised The Great Berkhamsted Bake off was I really wanted to organise an event that everyone in Berkhamsted could get involved with. My theme for the bake off was community – after judging took place teas, coffee and juice were served and everyone shared their cakes and were allowed to try each other’s – it was essentially a giant coffee morning. I also made sure the prizes were specific to Berkhamsted. I had an amazing time and lots of people spoke to me about doing another one next year.”

Lorna is currently on a gap year after studying at Ashlyns School sixth form and hopes to contribute significantly to her project in Burkina Faso before returning to the UK to study medicine at St Georges University London in September.
