Prize-giving Ceremony at Hemel Hempstead School

The senior prize giving, marking the academic year 2013-14, took place last month.

It was a celebration and acknowledgement of the academic and exceptional endeavours of students, past and present. The guest speaker, Kate Bellingham, a former member of staff and parent of students at the school, is passionate about the opportunities available from the study of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathmatics (STEM) subjects. She shared this passion and reflections on her career portfolio with students, staff, governors, parents and invited guests.

Longdean School charity quiz night

Students from Longdean School are holding a quiz night in aid of the Community Action Dacorum charity.

The quiz is on Friday, January 23 from 6:30pm at Longdean School. The price per person is £7.50 (max 6 people in a team). Table food is included but bring your own drink. Tea and coffee will be provided in the break, as well as a raffle throughout the evening.

If you would like to go, please send the money or cheque made payable to Longdean School, beforehand to ‘The Finance Office, Longdean School, Rumballs Road, Hemel Hempstead, HP3 8TP’ with your name, contact details and number of people in your team.

New building for Longdean School

Planning permission for Longdean’s new school building has been granted over the Christmas break.

The work on the new build is due to start early 2015 with the expected completion date to be July 2016.

Longdean School hold STEM Bloodhound day

The Design and Technology Department at Longdean School hosted a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) day last month, inviting The Bloodhound team, sponsored by local engineering company Atlas Copco, to speak with students about their 1000mph land speed record attempt happening in 2016.

Bloodhound were able to teach the students all about the engineering of the record breaking new car and the Bloodhound team held a jet powered racing competition for the students whose cars were proportionally for their size reaching over 300mph!

Roger Reeves, director of learning for Design and Technology said: “The day was really engaging and gave all the students a real insight into the world of engineering, aerodynamics, developing and improving ideas and the importance of team work.”

Enrichment days for young pupils at Longdean School

Year 7 students took part in an enrichment Enterprise Day entitled ‘Our World.’ The day was designed around understanding how different countries depend upon each other as the students worked in teams and undertook a number of challenges to get involved in understanding issues such as debt, exchange and fair trading.

Also last month, Year 8 students took part in a skills enterprise day.

Students worked in ‘business’ groups to design and market a new soap product. The students focused on revisiting and applying the PLT (personal, learning and thinking) skills they were taught their previous year.

ABC Preschool in Tring receives highest praise from Ofsted ... AGAIN

The ABC Preschool which is located in Akeman Street Baptist church in Tring has been awarded Outstanding by Ofsted for a second time in five years.

The Ofsted team inspected the preschool before Christmas and awarded them the highest possible grading employed by Ofsted for Early Years provision.

Angela Walshe who leads the playgroup said: “I am thrilled that Ofsted recognise the talent and commitment of the team who work so hard to make every second of the children’s experience with us a positive one.”

Tring school putting on a show at Pendley

The pupils at Tring School are putting on a production of Mother Courage and her children at the end of the month.

The show is on from January 20 to 23 at The Grass Roots Theatre, Station Road, Tring.
