Repair day sees odd-jobs and fix-its repaired by skilled volunteers

A free event promoting the fixing of broken items saw evertyhing from bathroom scales to vacuum cleaners mended by knowledgeable volunteers.

The day was organised by Community Action Dacorum’s latest project The Repair Shed at Sunnyside Rural Trust’s Hemel Food Garden.

Throughout the day, 23 items were assessed by a team of volunteer repairers and more than half were fixed on the spot.

Repair Shed Manager Chris Lee said: “Owners from across Dacorum gave our wonderful team of volunteers a range of challenges – from vacuum cleaners to CD, iPod and a record player and bathroom scales.

“Even people with items that were ‘destined for recycling’ went away happy because they’d got the assessment for free, along with a warm welcome and a cup of coffee in the Farm Shop.”

It was the end of a busy week for The Repair Shed with the official launch of the project two days earlier, including a visit from representatives of two organisations supporting the new initiative – the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) and the Hertfordshire Community Foundation.

The next Community Repair Day will be held on Saturday, May 23.
