Rape investigation: Case closed after “clear evidence” proves no offence took place

The 17-year-old girl told police she was raped last Sunday (May 10) as she was walking in a open air car park in the city centre.

But following a thorough investigation by officers, Thames Valley Police have closed the inquiry and are now “supporting” the complainant.

Detective Inspector Ian Jarvis said: “Officers have conducted a thorough investigation into this allegation and there is clear evidence that no offences took place.

“I would like to stress that no one should hesitate in coming forward if they have been a victim of crime of any sort.

“The force will support victims and witnesses throughout investigations in an attempt to prosecute offenders.

“Thames Valley Police takes all reports of this nature extremely seriously and will always conduct a thorough investigation.”

Last week the teenager claimed she had been grabbed by a man as she walked through the car park close to the shopping centre between 12.45pm and 1pm.

Officers told the Citizen they were pursuing all possible lines of enquiry, including gathering and viewing CCTV footage.

They said, however, that they were unable to identify a more specific location for where the incident took place.

Mr Jarvis added: “The support of the media and members of the public during this investigation has been much appreciated and I would like to thank them for their part in appealing for witnesses and sharing the information about this reported offence.”
