Rail bosses set to make announcement about bank holiday strike

London Midland hope to make an announcement shortly about how rail services will be affected by a 24-hour strike next week.

On Friday the RMT union said that it would take industrial action on Bank Holiday Monday (May 25). Union bosses claim that services will be brought “to a standstill” for commuters on the Tuesday.

A spokesman for London Midland said: “All train operating companies will be affected by the strike action and London Midland awaits further detail from Network Rail to determine if it will be able to run any train services during the strike period.

“Customers who have already purchased tickets for travel will be entitled to receive a full refund if industrial action takes place and they cannot travel.

Season ticket holders will also be entitled to compensation through the delay repay process.

“We are working closely with Network Rail to understand how this will affect our train services, and as soon as we know more, we will provide regular updates.”

RMT members voted 4-1 in favour of the strike last week.

They claim that Network Rail’s pay proposals fall “well short” of what is required to maintain the staff’s living standards, job security and working conditions.

RMT general secretary Mick Cash said: “Our members have decisively rejected the pay package offered by Network Rail and the failure of the company to make any moves whatsoever in light of the overwhelming vote in the ballot has left us with no option but to move to a rolling programme of industrial action.”
