Amanda, who has three cats, said: “We are so grateful to Zooplus for this generous donation, and so thankful to Vanarama for helping us to get this donation home.”

The pallets were unloaded at Amanda’s home inMalus Close, Adeyfield, before being collectedby representatives from Hungry Hearts Dog Rescue, Glendee Dog Rescue in Hatfield, Appledown Dog Rescue in Eaton Bray, Scratching Post Cat Rescue in Waltham Abbey and A1 Parrot Rescue in Bury St Edmunds.

The donation, which included dog and cat beds, baskets, bowls, collars and bird cages, had to be collected from Zooplus’ warehouse in Chesterfield, Derbyshire.

This is where Hemel-based vehicle leasing firm Vanarama stepped in, donating a van and driver to help collect the pallets.

Andy Alderson, Vanarama’s managing director, said: “Many of our staff have cats and so we have a vested interest in helping vital local charities like this that do great work for our much loved pets. It was a pleasure to lend our assistance.”

A Zooplus spokesman said: “As an online pet shop, caring for pets is at the very heart of everything Zooplus does. That’s why we’re always keen to support local pet charities in any way we can.

“We have also realised an opportunity to limit the amount of waste that we incur by donating the goods that can still be used to such worthy causes and we know how important it is to support these.

“Donating returned food, toys and accessories is one of the ways we try to make life a little easier for worthwhile charities who continue their excellent work, improving the lives of rescued animals.

“The feedback we get from charities and customers alike, truly makes this all worthwhile but it’s really people like Amanda who has gone above and beyond the call of duty, organising local collections among her charity friends, which sets such a great example of how a little community spirit and effort can go such a long way towards helping these pets in their hour of need.

“We really appreciate her efforts in co-ordination of the onward distribution of the donated items.”
