At around 3.20pm yesterday (Wednesday, September 30), officers tried to stop the blue Audi A3 on the southbound carriageway of the M1, near to junction 9, because they believed it to be stolen.

But the car failed to pull over and instead came off at the Hemel Hempstead junction, being pursued by officers into Hemel Hempstead town centre.

The vehicle reversed into a police car in Mercers, Highfield, before it collided with another vehicle in nearby Catsdell.

After the collision, the Audi was temporarily lost by police before it was found abandoned in Church Street.

A police officer received lower back injuries during the pursuit and was taken to Hemel’s Urgent Care Centre for an assessment.

No members of the public were injured.

Officers scoured the local area supported by the police helicopter plus a handler and dog from the BCH Dog Unit.

The Audi has been recovered by officers but a Herts Police spokesman said this morning that they are still looking for the driver of the vehicle.
