Police chopper and dog unit hunt after machete discovered – two men now in custody

A helicopter and dog unit search led to the arrest of a 20-year-old man yesterday after a machete was found by police.

Officers were called to Berkhamsted High Street at about 6.55pm after reports that a man had a knife in his possession.

They found two men in Seymour Road, Northchurch, not far from the George and Dragon pub – but one ran away from them. A machete was found nearby.

A 33-year-old man from Berkhamsted was arrested on suspicion of possession of cannabis and possession of a bladed article there and then.

Meanwhile, the police helicopter and dog unit were sent to try and locate the person who ran off.

A second man, aged 20 and of no fixed address, later handed himself in at Hemel Hempstead Police Station. He was arrested on suspicion of possession of a bladed article.

Both men remain in custody. It is not known why they may have been carrying the machete.
