Borough leaders will tomorrow consider whether a controversial plan to build 92 new homes should go ahead.

The proposal for houses on land between Shootersway and Durrants Lane, near Egerton Rothesay School in Berkhamsted, has already been blasted by people who live nearby.

Those against the proposal say a travel plan used to support the application was ‘misleading’ at a recent planning committee meeting.

Anne Foster, who lives nearby, said: “Given that Dacorum are fully supportive of this regardless of what we think, what influence can we have?”

Berkhamsted Town Councillor Tom Ritchie said: “I think the application before us on the table is poor and perfunctory.”

But Dacorum Borough Council planning officers suggest permission for the homes should be granted, subject to a list of planning conditions.

The decision would usually be made by its development control committee, but officers have recommended the decision is delegated to a planning manager. The committee will discuss the plans at Hemel Hempstead Civic Centre tomorrow in a meeting that begins at 7pm.

Berkhamsted Town Council said a new junction should be built on the A41 to cope with extra cars on Shootersway.

The busy Shootersway junction with Kings Road and Kingshill Way has put the fear into parents whose children regularly use it to walk to nearby Ashlyns School.

It has been suggested that S106 money from developer Taylor Wimpey could be used to install traffic lights at the site to offset the negative effect of the development.

A borough council report suggests £75,000 be set aside for the lights, followed by £119,625 at a later date. Town councillor Anthony Armytage said the infrastructure should be put in place before the homes are allowed to be built.

There would be 200 parking spaces and 26 affordable homes on the site, if Taylor Wimpey’s plans go ahead.
