Hertfordshire Police are asking the public to avoid Waterhouse Street in Hemel Hempstead after officers closed the road as a precaution to deal with an incident earlier this morning.

Officers were called to an address in Swan Court, Waterhouse Street, just before 6am today (Tuesday), responding to a concern for welfare.

A spokesman for Hertfordshire Police said: "As a precaution the road was closed as officers responded to a man throwing items from the balcony of his flat.

"The matter has now been resolved and the individual has been detained under the mental health act.

"The road will remain closed for an hour or so as efforts to clean up continue.

"We thank the public for their understanding in this matter."
