Weather Watch: Dry conditions after wet start to April

So how did the weather statistics stack up last month, and do the figures reflect what you might expect?

March did seem to be a rather nondescript month across Aylesbury and the surrounding area.

There were no late season snowfalls but, equally, no unusually warm days either.

If anything, the month had a rather cool feel to it, so it may come as a surprise to hear that, in this part of the world, temperatures were around a degree above average for March.

We only saw a below expected 3 or 4 air frosts, and this is part of the explanation for the higher than normal temperatures overall.

Much of the month was very dry and, in the first 3 weeks, under 5mm of rain was recorded.

The balance was redressed in some part during the final week of the month, but Aylesbury and the surrounding area only received around 30mm of rain in total, less than 50% of what we might expect.

March was much sunnier than average, with around 140-150 hours of sunshine recorded across central-southern England, around 120% of normal.

It has been a fairly wet start to April, with around 14mm of rain already recorded across the Aylesbury Vale, and also a windy one with gusts of over 50mph late last week.

However, high pressure has now taken charge of our weather.

This normally brings with it fine and settled conditions, much as we’ve seen so far this week.

The mainly dry weather looks set to continue through the next couple of days and, when sunny spells break through, temperatures will reach at least 15 or 16C, perhaps even higher on Friday afternoon.

Night-times will be chilly, however, possibly with some fog.

A little cooler over the weekend with the chance of a few showers.

However, further spells of sunshine too.
