John Pilgrim: My dog really is my best friend

I dried Gemma off with her favourite towel then spread another one on the sofa so that she could sleep it off. As she dozed with just her nose sticking out from under the towel I treated myself to a cup of tea and watched my THE dog and I have been caught out by several heavy showers on our recent walks and the other day we returned home much the worst for wear.

It occurred to me that she has a pretty good life really, two good meals a day, plenty of exercise when she can chase squirrels or her ball’ a visit to the doggie beauty parlour twice or THE dog and I have been caught out by several heavy showers on our recent walks and the other day we returned home much the worst for wear.

In addition I administer ear cleaner regularly and try to keep her free of fleas and ticks. When she loses a ball I purchase more and even get buy the odd soft toy, at the moment she has a plastic pig which grunts and a cuddly Meerkat

Then I thought about what she offers me in return. The answer is just about all the love and devotion I need with a great sense of humour to go with it. Quite simply she is just about the best friend I have and I am very grateful.

I finished my cup of tea and gave her a friendly cuddle just to let her know I love her and she turned her head away and began to scratch her nether regions!

The following day after a paddle in the rain swollen stream in the park she returned home and shook the muddy water off all over the wall in the sitting room and while I tried to clean it off she quietly stole upstairs where I found her cuddled up on the on the nice clean duvet!
