Number of county teens out of work or training at record low

Government figures announced today reveal that Hertfordshire’s ‘NEET’ rate is almost 1% lower than the national average, at a rate of just 3.8% compared to 4.7%.

The figures are based on those aged 16 to 19 based on their school year group or ‘academic age’ as at December, but the wider picture has improved further up to January of this year when the county’s level was revealed to be at an all time low of 3.5%.

Herts County Council cabinet member for enterprise, education and skills Chris Hayward welcomed the news, and praised the work of staff at Hertfordshire County Council’s Youth Connexions, which supports young people with their progression into education, employment or training.

He said: “This is a major milestone in our target to achieve a higher proportion of young people in education or training and to support their transition into the world of work.

“This excellent figure is a reflection of the commitment of Youth Connexions staff and our partners in aiming for the best possible opportunities for Hertfordshire’s young people.”

Youth Connexions is a county council service working alongside schools, colleges and employers to offer careers guidance and work-related learning.

Currently the service has contact with 97% of 16 to 19 year olds in the county – including from its Hemel Hempstead base at Jarman Park’s XC Centre.
