Motorhead blasted for 124mph dash

Michael Clark,41, of Shootersway Lane, Berkhamsted, was clocked driving almost double the 70mph speed limit in a high-end Lotus Exige supercar near the Chesham exit of the road back in March.

On top of the hefty fine – which is half the maximum magistrates are allowed to impose – the speedster was also ordered to shell out a £120 victim surcharge and £650 in legal costs.

The tough fine has been praised by Herts Police, who are calling for speedsters like Clark to stop being ‘selfish’ as part of the nationally-recognised Road Safety Week campaign.

The Police and Crime Comissioner for Hertfordshire David Lloyd said: “With so many people at risk of greater harm if someone speeds or drives carelessly, it is vital that we look out for each other on the roads.”

There have been a number of crashes on the A41 in recent months and in September a motorcyclist was left in a critical conidition after a serious collision.

Chief Insp Richard Hann, who heads up the Tri-Force (Herts, Beds and Cambs) Road Policing Unit, said: “The roads can be dangerous and deaths and injuries often occur because no consideration is given to other road users.”

Driver awareness charity Brake – which ran the nationally-recognised Road Safety Week in the run-up to Saturday, says that five deaths and 61 serious injuries occur on the UK’s roads every day.

Brake spokesman Sarah-Jane Martin said: “Speeding drivers are risking not only their own lives but the lives of all those around them.

“At Brake, we see every day the devastating impact road crashes caused by speeding have on and communities across the county.

“That’s why we need traffic enforcement to be made a national policing priority, as well as higher on-the-spot fines and tougher sentencing to provide a real deterrent to risky law-breaking drivers.”
