The man, who did not want to be named, said he was in bed when he heard the car hit the home in New Mill, Tring, in the early hours of Saturday, July 11.

He said: “My neighbours were having a party and I heard a clanging, which I thought was them falling over their recycling bins.

“The noise lasted quite a while so I got up to look out of the window and saw a car steaming in front of one of the new houses.

“The air bags had gone off and the guy had managed to get out of the car.”

The new houses, which are built on the former site of New Mill Social Centre, caused some controversy among residents after Tring Team Parish first made plans for the development in 2012.

The neighbour said: “People did not want those houses built because they thought they were too close to the roundabout.

“When it just used to be a hedge there, a car used to end up in it several times a year – now it’s someone’s house.

“People come up Icknield Way too quickly and the visibility to the right is pretty poor.

“I’m a cyclist and I’ve nearly been wiped out on that road.”
