This police picture shows a reckless cyclist riding towards London on the hard shoulder of the M1 motorway.

Officers with the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Road policing Unit were so shocked by Sunday’s incident in the visibility reducing wet weather that they tweeted “Somebody thought it was OK to cycle to London on the M1, escorted safely off at Redbourn. #dontbeadummy”

A Hertfordshire Constabulary spokesman added the cyclist was “offered words of advice”.

He said: “Police were called following reports of a man cycling on the M1 shortly before 12 noon. Police escorted the man off the motorway to safety at Junction 9 and offered words of advice to the cyclist.”
