Amazon workers gearing up for the busy festive season were treated to an early Christmas present when cheeky chart-topper Olly Murs serenaded them at Hemel Hempstead’s giant fulfilment centre.
The former X Factor contestant – who has become a household name with his run of catchy pop tunes – visited the depot in Boundary Way to launch his new album Never Been Better.
The visit coincided with Amazon’s Black Friday Deals Week, and also involved the star taking on a celebrity gift-wrap challenge in an attempt to beat previous contestants One Direction and Little Mix in other Amazon centres. He told staff: “I’ll never live it down if I don’t beat One Direction and Little Mix. I’ve got amazing hand-eye coordination. This could go badly wrong though.”
Not about to give up his day job, Olly completed the challenge in 38 seconds, placing him last after Little Mix and 1D’s Louis Tomlinson, who completed the challenge in 15.9 seconds.
He also wrapped a signed copy of his latest album.
He said: “The challenge was really fun. I was expecting it to be harder because wrapping presents is not my thing. My mum wraps most of mine, I am shocking at wrapping presents.
“I am most looking forward to eating at my mum’s this Christmas. I haven’t had a dinner at my mum’s this year and that is pretty bad. I am really looking forward to having her roast dinner.
“My favourite ever Christmas memory is the year I got a Sega Megadrive, I will never forget it, it was my first real games console. We didn’t have much money at Christmas and I got that so it was a big thing.”
His surprise performances of latest single Wrapped Up and a cover of festive favourite I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day created an impromptu dancefloor in the workplace.
The appearance also included an exclusive album signing and meet and greet sessions with Amazon staff to thank them for their hard work in delivering Christmas gifts during the festive season.
