The warlike craft is not, however, part of any military attack on the town, but the latest stage of the landmark’s renovation works.

According to contractors working to restore the site to its former Geoffrey Jellicoe-designed glory, the boat is fitted with specialist magnetic strips which can pick up the pennies and coins thrown over the Gardens’ bridges by children making wishes.

The floor of the gardens must be completely cleared in order to lay fresh silt along the bottom of the lake areas.

Canada geese which populate the area are being evacuated to complete the work, which is expected to take two to three days.

It is estimated around £700 in loose change has already been collected by the small, remotely operated submarine.

All funds collected will be put towards the improvement scheme.
