While stocks last, Herts County Council is giving out free copies of Bear’s Reading Adventure to all pre-school children with library membership when they come along to one of its weekday Toddler Tales events.

The book, which has been produced by the BookTrust, encourages young families to complete the story following the adventures of Bookstart Bear using 10 picture stickers.

The stickers will be given out at Toddler Tales each week to every child who borrows an item from the library to enjoy at home. Once they collect all the stickers, they can create and download a personalised certificate online.

There are Toddler Tales sessions at Tring Library from 10.30am to 11am on Mondays, Abbots Langley Library from 2.15pm to 2.45pm on Tuesdays, and Hemel Hempstead Library from 2.15pm to 2.45pm on Wednesdays.

Berkhamsted Library has Storysack from 10.15am to 11am on Fridays, run by Dacorum Rural Children’s Centre.

Author of Bear’s Reading Adventure, Gemma Malley, said: “Reading with your child is fun, and a great way to spend time together. If a parent reads to their children every day, they will be almost 12 months ahead of their age group when they start school.”

Cabinet member for libraries, Teresa Heritage, said: “Our Toddler Tales events are a fantastic way to encourage children to engage with books from an early age.

“I hope that the new book will encourage even more families with younger children to join the library and take part in events like Toddler Tales regularly, as well as to enjoy reading library books at home.”
