“The vehicle collided with the wall before the driver drove off. Officers attended to search the area however, the vehicle was not traced.”

Geoff Warby, who lives in a flat above the Londis corner shop opposite the wall that was destroyed, was in bed when he heard a loud noise.

He said: “I was in bed having a lie in and I heard this great big bang. I went into the living room, looked out of the window and saw the bricks all over the pavement.

“I didn’t see anyone driving off, but I think they might have been coming up the hill, lost control and hit the wall.”

Residents later discussed the incident on the town’s Everything Tring Facebook page, with one saying: “Any decent person would realise that they had made a mistake, and a mistake I am sure it is, and would pull over, take responsibility for their actions and knock on the door of the house to make the owner aware.”

Herts police urged anyone with information on the incident to call 101 quoting reference number ISR 149 of January 18.
