Hemel police officer named as millionth London Marathon finisher

Shannon Foudy, 39, who lives in Hemel Hempstead, ran her first marathon two weeks ago along with 38,000 other runners.

In 2010, she gave birth at just 26 weeks and daughter Catrin, weighing just 2lb 5oz, battled through organ failure and a brain haemorrhage at the Luton and Dunstable Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

To say thank you, the serving officer ran the marathon for the unit and she was number one million to cross the line since the event began in 1981.

Catrin, now a thriving six year old, along with Shanon’s partner, Jamie, and her mum and dad were there to cheer her on.

“I knew about the one in a million campaign and it’s unbelievable that I am the millionth finisher,” Shannon said.

“I ran to say thank you to the Luton and Dunstable NICU and it is the most worthwhile thing I have ever done.

“Catrin, Jamie and my mum and dad were at the 14 mile mark so I stopped there for a few cuddles.

“Being surrounded by so many people running for great causes was amazing.”

Hugh Brasher, event director of the Virgin Money London Marathon, said: “Shannon epitomises the spirit of the London Marathon.

“She was a novice runner inspired to take on the challenge of 26.2 miles for a very personal cause and it’s wonderful she is our millionth finisher.”

Shannon, who has raised more than £2,300 for the unit, was presented with a unique #oneinamillion t-shirt and received a guaranteed place for next year.
