A group of men who set fire to a newly planted tree in the town centre are being hunted by police.
The arson incident happened on the Marlowes shortly before 8.30pm on Monday, May 25.
Four suspects were walking through the pedestrianised area of the town centre when one of them then stopped and used a lighter to set fire to the hessian wrap around the bottom of the tree.
The group ran off towards Seldon Hill via an alleyway next to Blockbusters.
PC Adam Clark said: “This was a mindless and extremely dangerous act and I am keen to trace those responsible as soon as possible.
“I would urge anyone who saw what happened, or who thinks they may have seen the group in the area around the time stated to contact me.”
