Flying the flag at classic car show

Around 80 vehicles dating from the 1920s to the 1970s were on display in Newground Road, Aldbury, on Sunday.

It is the second time that Alan Turney, 55, has organised the event.

“I was thinking of things to do in the village and I own classic vehicles myself,” he said.

“It seemed like a good idea with the aim of raising some money for the legion’s Poppy Appeal.”

Mr Turney, who served in the RAF, owns a Second World War Willys Jeep and a GMC 6x6 truck.

He purchased the jeep in 2002 after falling in love with the vehicle when, as a child, he hitched a ride in one during filming around Aldbury for the American war movie The Dirty Dozen.

Mr Turney, who still lives in the village in Stoneycroft, said: “We used to jump in various vehicles and get rides around the village.”
