The event was held after a service at St Peter’s in Berkhamsted, during which there was a free Buxtehude cantata musical performance.

It was performed in German style, from the balcony at the back, by the Bridgewater Sinfonietta during the Eucharist.

Then came the outdoor Bierfest and Bavarian breakfast – staged as part of the second day of the first St Peter’s Kulturelles Oktoberfest, which the church hopes to stage again.

On Saturday, the church hosted a concert by talented young singers, a talk on cultural relationships and a tasting of the finest German wines.

The speech by the University of Hertfordshire’s Alix Green examined how Germany was affected by the fall of the Berlin Wall 25 years ago.
