Michael Miller, aged 26, and Jeff Wornham, 28, died in the line of duty as they tried to rescue a woman from a blaze on the 14th floor of an apartment block in the town in 2005.

Crews on duty at fire stations throughout the county stood on parade in silence for two minutes on Monday, which marked the 10-year anniversary of the tragedy in which the woman, mother of two Natalie Close, was also killed.

Keith Handscomb of the East Anglia Fire Brigades Union said: “We offer our sincere condolences to the families of Michael and Jeff on this 10th anniversary of their sad loss.

“Our thoughts are also with all the other Hertfordshire firefighters who attended the incident that night in 2005 and who had the unenviable task of finding their fallen comrades and seeing the job through. We salute you.”
