A joint operation by Herts County Council’s trading standards officers, HM Revenue and Customs, the police and an environmental health officer from Dacorum Borough Council led to 2,080 cigarettes, 139 pouches of hand rolling tobacco, 2.7 litres of spirits and 113 bottles of wine.

Officers acting on prior intelligence targeted six commercial premises, four of which had stock that raised concerns.

The seized products will now be assessed and tested to see if any offences have been committed.

Richard Thake, cabinet member for community safety at Herts County Council said: “It is extremely disappointing that some shopkeepers think they can get away with selling fake products and not paying duty on goods.

“In particular, those involved in dealing in illegal tobacco may be encouraging people, including children, to smoke by providing a cheap source.
