Drizzly Lions fete isstill a roaring success

The Berkhamsted Lions Fete was wet, but not a washout and still a roaring success, according to the club’s president.

A regular fixture in the friendly charity club’s calendar, the summer fete is the Lions’ major annual fundraiser and this year’s extravaganze was held on Monday aqt the town’s Sports Club.

President Peter Block, reported attendance of around 1,000 people, which he said was understandably down on last year’s exceptional numbers.

He said: “The steady rain during the day, amounting to some 15mm, made it difficult for all, but everyone including the stall holders seemed to be very philosophical about it.

“I congratulate the core organising team of Lions Emma Pearce, Chris Westwood and Jane Cresswell for their detailed planning and efficient implementation, and thankall the Lions, partners, Friends of Lions, friends, army and air cadets who helped them cope with the challenges of the day.

“It was wet, but certainly not a washout! Whilst we don’t know yet whether we’ve broken even or not, we do know that the revenue from adverts in the programme, and donations from our sponsors has reduced our financial exposure significantly.”

The club’s own fundraising stalls, offering everything from cakes to a Bottle Stall and Auction of Promises, did much better than expected, given the downpour.

Attractions on the day included a 55-metre zipwire in theGo Safari Den, a crazy golf challenge, bucking bronco and the spider mountain.

The wild lion-themed day also featured a pets den with an animal farm and owl display, as well as refreshments in the the Feeding Time zone and Watering Hole Den.
