The pooch, named Mac, was rushed to vets in the back of a police car after being discovered close to the Bourne End junction on Sunday night.

He had suffered a fractured leg and dislocated hip.

Because it was out of hours, the pet was treated by vet Alexandra Tischer from Vets Now, which provides an emergency service for Hemel Hempstead’s Barton Lodge Vets.

Alexandra said: “When Mac arrived at the clinic he was very distressed after being involved in a road traffic accident.

“Thankfully we were able to give him emergency treatment and stabilise his condition overnight. He was transferred to his regular vet in the morning for further care.

“We wish him a speedy recovery and home he is back on his feet as quickly as possible.”

The dog was looked after at Springwell Veterinary Surgery in Tring and a spokesman for Vets Now said Mac has now been returned to his owner.
