Court orders ‘dangerous’ Border Collie to be muzzled after dog attack

Simon West, 55, from Pheasant Close, Berkhamsted appeared at St Albans Magistrates Court on Friday (October 30).

He pleaded guilty to allowing the black and white dog to be ‘dangerously out of control’ on Northchurch Common in June this year.

During the incident the dog, which was not on a lead, grabbed a small Terrier by the neck and shook it around.

The dog required treatment from a vet for his injuries.

West has now been ordered to keep the dog muzzled and on a lead in public places at all times, otherwise it will be destroyed.

He was also ordered to pay £540 in costs, compensation and fines.

The investigation into the attack was led by Berkhamsted and Tring’s Safer Neighbourhood Team.

Neighbourhood Sergeant Adele Hopkin said: “We are pleased with the outcome of the hearing, and I am sure local residents will be too.

“The dog in question is clearly a danger to other animals and it is essential that it is kept muzzled so that it cannot do harm.

“This is also a reminder to anyone who owns a dog that it is their responsibility to ensure it is under control at all times and does not pose a threat to other animals or humans.”

The law concerning the control of dogs has been amended and came into effect in May last year.

It is against the law to let a dog be dangerously out of control anywhere – including in a public place and a private place such as your home, a neighbour’s home or in the garden.
