Police and Highways Agency Traffic Officers are at the scene dealing with the incident, which took place at 6.30am.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area as there are considerable delays back to junction 27, and the diversion route is also heavily congested.

The motorway will fully reopen as soon as it is safe to do so – currently expected to be at around 11.30am.

At the moment, traffic on the road is moving at an average speed of 18mph.
