Children in Need’s Rickshaw Challenge whizzes by

Along the route, the charity challenge run by The One Show will be passing through Bedmond, Kings Langley and Chipperfield on its way from the Chilterns’ Misbourne Valley through to the Eastenders set in Elstree.

Eagle-eyed spectactors may catch a glimpse of presenters Matt Baker and Alex Jones, along with the team of six young people, each supported by projects funded by BBC Children in Need, as they power the rickshaw in the last leg of the 450-mile journey across England.

Now in its fourth year and having raised over £5 million for the charity, the team are hoping to smash their records with their best year of fundraising yet. Beginning at the BBC’s Media City near Manchester, the rickshaw is undertaking a ‘Salford to Walford’ journey across England, finishing live at the iconic EastEnders set during the BBC Children in Need Appeal tonight.

Speaking of the challenge, Matt Baker said: “We’re hoping for our biggest fundraiser ever for Team Rickshaw, so the pressure is really on for the riders. And of course, to the Great British public, we need your support more than ever.

“It’s such a fantastic project, where people who’ve benefited from the charity first-hand can really give back, and this year we’ll be getting much more of an insight into their own stories, which brings opportunities and challenges of its own.

“Myself and Alex have served our time on the rickshaw and have clocked up our fair share of public speaking too, so we’ll be on hand to help at any time of the journey.”

Hemel Hempstead-based Haven Holidays’ head office will again be one of the official call centres for tonight’s telethon.

Staff are dressing up superhero theme and town MP Mike Penning will judge the standards this afternoon.

The Haven team also took to the Marlowes Shopping Centre for a pop-up bake sale recently, raising £700 for the cause.
