Husband and wife team Ricardo and Alicia Afonso, who set up the Afonso School of Performing Arts in Berkhamsted last September, will sponsor two children who pass the audition.

The dance academy is the only one in the county taking part in the project with Kallikids – an accreditation website for family activities – and now youngsters from all walks of life are being invited to apply for the sponsored places.

It costs nothing to apply and the scheme means the classes are now open to those children whose parents would not normally be able to afford it.

Afonso School of Performing Arts principal Alicia said: “Two children from Berkhamsted and the surrounding areas will get an opportunity to attend one year’s worth of free classes in ballet, tap, street dance and/or musical theatre, being taught by top industry professionals.

“Our classes aim to inspire and bring out the best in each child, helping to boost their confidence and self-esteem.”

This is the second year KalliKids has run the Sponsored Child scheme. Last year more than 20 kids benefitted and this year more than 85 children will benefit across the country.

Kallikids founder Karen Bach said: “Inspiring young people to take part in new activities is pivotal to everything we do.

“Not only does it further their skills but also helps nurture their confidence and social skills.”
