Home volunteers offer support and companionship to patients and their carers by helping with practical tasks, joining in with activities and outings or even offering a sitting service so that a carer can leave the house or catch up on some rest.

This is a sensitive role so the right volunteer should have excellent communication skills, be committed to providing a high standard of care as well as being flexible and reliable.

New volunteers will follow a training course on the first 3 Wednesdays in October. The course will be at Grove House in St Albans and will take place in the evenings.

The hospice urgently needs an admin volunteer for its busy Retail and Trading centre in Akeman Street, Tring.

You would be joining a team of staff and volunteers who make sure the day to day office tasks run smoothly and efficiently. This is a varied role and you could find yourself dealing with telephone enquiries, meeting and greeting customers, using Excel to check daily sales sheets or dealing with stationary requests.

If you have a confident telephone manner, enjoy meeting people and have basic it skills, this could be the role for you.

Another way to help the hospice is by becoming a Community Links Volunteer.

You will be helping with fundraising activities, distributing flyers and posters to public venues, helping to recruit volunteers for flag days or finding new venues for collecting tins.

You will be allocated a Community Engagement Officer to support you in your role and, with their agreement, can use your initiative and your own ideas to promote the hospice and its work in your area.
