Rafal Bargiel, also known as Tomasz Puchalski, 40, of no fixed abode was jailed for life today after attacking two women in separate incidents.

It has since been confirmed that Bargiel was on police bail for the first attack, which happened in November 2014, when he raped another woman in a hotel room in April this year.

A Herts Police spokesman said: “I can confirm that Bargiel was on police bail but had not been charged at this stage due to insufficient evidence, with further enquiries being progressed.”

He had also served time behind bars for a similar offence in his native Poland but had entered the UK under a false identity, making it difficult for the authorities to discover who he really was.

In November 2014, Bargiel collected a woman from a train station in London in his Jaguar before taking her to a remote location near Hemel Hempstead where he forced her to participate in sexual acts.

He punched her in the face and forced her to comply with his demands before returning her to London where the victim confided in friends and called the police.

Then in April this year Bargiel took another victim to a hotel in Cheshunt, Herts, where he raped her.

He must serve a minimum term of eight years.
