Big clean-up for Queen's birthday

Hertfordshire has already kicked off its support for the national Clean for the Queen initiative, with a volunteer-led litter picking event.

Herts County Council Chairman Frances Button was joined by Lord Lieutenant of Herts Lady Verulam and Deputy Mayor of St Albans Gillian Clark, as well as a team of volunteers to collect litter along a stretch of the Alban Way last month.

In the run-up to The Queen’s 90th birthday on 21 April, Clean for the Queen aims to inspire a million people to take action and spend a few hours together litter-picking to make the places where we live more beautiful.

Clean for The Queen litter blitzes are taking place throughout the UK, with the biggest clear-up taking place this weekend, from Friday to Sunday, March 4 to 6.

In Berkhamsted, there’s a litter pick at Butts Meadow on Friday morning.

At Westfield Primary School, pupils will be litter picking in and around the school grounds.

On Sunday, 1st Berkhamsted Scouts are helping to clear up for the annual Half Marathon & Fun Run organised by the Rotary Club of Berkhamsted & Bulbourne.

Members of St Mary and St Joseph RC Church in Hemel Hempstead are taking part in a community litter pick on Sunday afternoon.

And also on Sunday, Friends of Lock 55 and The Rising Sun Canal Adoption Group will be litter picking, lock painting, wildlife gardening and undertaking light gardening work to tidy up the patch of the Grand Union Canal adjacent to George Street.

Frances Button said: “We want Hertfordshire to be sparklingly clean for Her Majesty’s 90th birthday and I’d encourage residents to sign up to events in their area over the weekend.”
